Web Design Dubai Trends Series

We have been coming up with a series of blogs on SEO trends in Dubai. Similarly we have also commenced a series of blogs on the web design trends in Dubai. This blog of ours talks about the site speed and its impact on conversion rates. Without much ado, let us begin dwelling on the subject of our focus.

Why is site speed relevant for web design?

Today’s customer is always on the move. They expect service which is rendered swiftly and without a hitch. Researchers across various organizations have studied user behaviour and site speed. Here is a quick summary of what some of those studies say:

1. A 5 second increase in the loading speed increased page views by 25% and also increased the revenue by 7-12%. This was seen by Shopzilla.

2.  Marrissa Mayer from Google found that a page loading drop from 400 milli seconds to 900 milli seconds resulted in 25% lesser usage.

3. A co study between two researchers from Bing and Google showed that a 2 second slowdown in site speed resulted in a 1.8% drop in site viewing and 4% drop in revenues.

This means that when a site loads faster, the revenues increase. This also means that web designer should be paying heed to the elements of web design in order to increase profits. One can no longer create websites which take forever to load!

Site Speed and SEO

It is also important to mention the fact here that Google has started considering site speed as a parameter to measure the page rank. User experience is also getting increasingly linked to the speed of loading of a website. From an SEO perspective, the speed of loading of the website, thus, attains a great degree of importance. The intent of undertaking SEO is to feature on top of the web page and also to attract more clients. Faster loading websites cater to a client’s requirements better. So when search engine optimization is being carried out, the site speed optimization should be undertaken simultaneously. Benefits of SEO can be bets enjoyed only when the website opens up like a bullet, immaterial of the device on which it is being opened. This also now means that the web design should be eschewing unwanted design elements which take a longer time to load.

Conclusion

Site speed optimization plays a vital role in SEO and hence conversions. Web designers will be best served if they render websites which not only provide a great user experience but also load up quickly, without making a customer wait. Eschewing unwanted fancy design elements such as heavy graphics will go a long way in enhancing the site speed and catapulting revenues. If you are a web designer, it will be prudent if you pay a lot of attention to site loading speed as it is an important facet in marketing trends these days! Happy loading!

Accordions are gaining popularity in the design of a web user interface. This blog of ours throws light on accordions, their usage, and the best practises which you can look at adopting while using accordions.

Accordions are

Accordions can be loosely envisaged and used as content management tools. An accordion menu enables dynamic switching whenever the content becomes too much or too heavy to handle. The need for an accordion menu arises when you want the web user interface to provide a great user experience. So in cases, like say an FAQ page, where the answers are long and hence you have to hide content to enable easy viewing and scrolling, an accordion menu becomes appropriate. Multiple panes to ease viewing pains, which is what accordions are!

Accordions are found in

Common accordions are found in websites where there is a sliding menu effect or when drop down menus are found with the hovering effect in place. This helps in enhancing the user experience, while at the same time ensuring that all the content is viewed.

Accordions are found in content which is placed on tabbed widgets. Such menus leverage tabs to handle the content which flows, instead of using the conventional vertical lists. Java Script has made this process super easy. Such accordions can also be rendered using CSS3. Additionally in CSS3, you can eschew with much of coding.

The different types of accordions are

  • 3d accordions: Usually rendered using CSS3, they help in creating 3d effects, replete with rotation
  • Material Lists: For adding lists and ease the viewing of every header. This accordion is of great use whenever lists are used, and it enhances usability.
  • Dark UI accordion: Used in places where the web interface needs a contrast or highlighting of menu options is needed
  • Full Width Content: When highlighting the essence of minimalism or web user interface is enriched with a full width content placement
  • Multi level accordion: To emphasis on different options
  • Color accordion: To use color coding for emphasis

 Best practises for using accordions

  • Limit the number of accordions on a page to 5-6. Anything more means your page is too wordy!
  • Keep the content within every accordion to a minimal length. Your reader should read, find it easy to read, and understand whatever they have read. Longer reads means scrolling, exhausting as the user has to read more, and hence not a great user experience.
  • Do not put call to actions in some accordion in a page. Not all accordions in a page are read. So tread here with caution.
  • Do not get caught in minimalism! Do not use just 1 accordion per page. Strike a balance with the number of accordions used.

As can be seen accordions come in multifarious forms, and when used properly can rally boost up the user interface. Use with caution and reap benefits!
